A romantic-dramedy inspired by true events created by Christine ‘DJ Kix’ Mwaturura

A new audio drama from Zimbabwean-Australian independent producer Christine ‘DJ Kix’ Mwaturura (PBS FM) is here! Told over six episodes, this is a story about what remains after the initial butterflies and excitement of something new have faded.

Private Affairs was created and written by Christine, drawing from her own lived experiences of dating interracially and interculturally.

A hopeless romantic, I speak to Christine to get ALL the tea from what inspired her to bring us what she says: “Imagine if Insecure; Modern Love: The Podcast; and Dirty Diana made a pod-baby with a Zimbabwean-Aussie accent.”

What inspired you to create Private Affairs?

The podcast is inspired by a blog that I used to write about my dating adventures in Melbourne. There was one particular story from the blog that never quite left me. You know when you have an itch that you need to scratch? That’s what this felt like for me—I had to do something with this story because I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The characters are so enticing. Did you personally cast them for your series?

I did all the casting, which was a learning experience for me because I’d never done casting for anything, or drama, to be frank. I feel really lucky to have found all the wonderful actors that you hear on the show. Everyone brought their A-game!

Jerry, the sound designer/composer/mixer, is also a gem! In fact, a blessing. He’s a genius in creating an immersive soundscape with a unique dopeness. I crush so hard on his work—too much juice!

Can you share what the creative process was like?

In a word: hard. It was a real emotional roller coaster. Every stage had its highs and lows, which required a lot of mental resilience. In terms of process, everything depended on the script, so naturally, that’s where I started, and for me, writing doesn’t always come easily. It’s like trying to have an orgasm on-demand every day. Sometimes it just doesn’t happen despite your best efforts.

Once I had enough of the script written, I had a better idea of the show’s tone, so then I went into casting the characters, choosing the cover art style, figuring out the music genres and moods etc.

What advice would you give new creatives entering into the world of audio drama?

  1. Read scripts and watch TV/films (a lot). Try figure out why some shows work better than others for you.
  2. You eventually need to start writing; don’t get stuck at step one, “researching”
  3. Get feedback early from an unbiased third party, preferably from your primary target audience.
  4. It will get hard. Take breaks but keep going.
  5. Have an accountability partner or community—people who will badger you about how your project is progressing.

I can’t wait to hear more. How can we support Private Affairs?

Making a podcast like this is expensive and time-consuming, so any donations will really help make future productions possible. People can donate securely through PayPal, at privateaffairspod.com.

If people aren’t in a position to financially support, sharing the podcast and rating and reviewing us can help as well to show that there’s a demand for this type of content.

"If you talk about the sustainability aspect it can kill the romance and excitement that fashion brings. Everyone wants the fantasy, to look good and feel fabulous. I wanted to create a commercial product that has quite a powerful story." Tegan Cowlishaw.
