Four people. Four conversations. Four perspectives. Four truths.
Why isn’t Australia’s cultural diversity reflected in mainstream media? How do those at the margins find a voice?
Ascension Matters is an eight-part web series featuring four informed individuals: Adolfo Aranjuez (The Writer), Jessica Lovett-Murray (The Runner), Wani Le Frére (The Poet) and Zulfiye Tufa (The Fashionista).
Through moving personal anecdotes, considered opinion and real-world examples, this web series gives a glimpse into the frank and imperative conversations taking place in Australia behind closed doors.
The digital series explores a multitude of themes, including diverse representation, migration, cultural identity, racism, tokenism, colonisation, mental health, and many other social issues not often covered by mainstream media. Through its conscious dialogue, Ms Sarago hopes to raise awareness of the importance of diverse representation in Australia’s media.
“Everyone has the capacity to teach one another – this is what we are here for. Some of the many answers we search for are found in the hearts, minds and stories of a stranger we haven’t met.”
“Australia possesses one of the most culturally diverse populations in the world. So why don’t we see this diversity reflected back at us? Ascension Matters was created to show the beauty inherent in diversity, striving to replace fear with understanding – a solution to Australia’s cultural divide.”
